How to select Grad Schools to apply to

Grad School admissions largely depend om establishing   a match with your research or career interests.

It is important to do  your research before applying to schools. Often there are excellent programs at unexpected universities where financial support may be easier to obtain.

Lets look at this   through a case study.
Student J wanted to apply for a program n Computer Science with a strong reseatch  interest in Artificial Intelligence.( AI)

Naturally  the  premier C institutes namely, Stanford,  MIT, CMU  have excellent graduate programs and  strong AI  groups.

I helped J identify the main AI  organisation - namely the AAAI - American Association for AI.
On the AAAI website - www.aaai.org   we found the list of AI fellows -   researchres who had been honored for their contributions to the field:

Buy studying the list  we found that while several were from the expected universities - CMU, Stanford,  MIT and  Berkeley -  many other universities - namely USC, Maryland, Pittsburgh and Rochester  hd strong research groups for AI.
J was accepted at one f these with strong financial support.
